The Real Time Canine II

After spending 2 years writing the Real Time Canine, the adventure continues with The Real Time Canine II. Read along as I look for just the right puppy to continue the experience. After false starts with Tim and Jed, I am currently training young Tam, and Spot, which are both off to a strong start. Please visit the RTC II to read about training sessions as they occur.

This is a 10 year old lab mix named Chai and a 4 Paws Pimple Ball with a bell in it. Chai got his tongue stuck in the rubber ball and by the time it had been cut off at the vet, the blood flow to his tongue had been cut off for too long and it had to be surgically removed. The ball only has one hole in it, so when the dog bit down the air was pushed out creating a vacuum, and when air was drawn back into the ball after the dog released it, his tongue was sucked in and got stuck. This accident happened in 2008, but according to the weblog written by Chai's owner, the company was aware of the design flaw as early as 2005 when another dog was killed from a similar accident.
I'm posting this information for 2 reasons. To make you aware of the danger in case you own one of these toys like I did, and to suggest that you visit Chai's website. His owner feels that 4 Paws isn't doing enough to get this product off store shelves and is asking us to write an email to their customer service department. You'll find a sample email along with the address on the site. There are 2 videos there showing Chai and the state of his life after the accident. It was more than enough motivation for me to send the email.
