The Real Time Canine II

After spending 2 years writing the Real Time Canine, the adventure continues with The Real Time Canine II. Read along as I look for just the right puppy to continue the experience. After false starts with Tim and Jed, I am currently training young Tam, and Spot, which are both off to a strong start. Please visit the RTC II to read about training sessions as they occur.

Who the hell is Karin Mattson?

I posted this blog about Karin yesterday and here's the finals update: She finished a strong 7th with 433 points and 37.5 judges merit points. Folks, that's 7th IN THE WORLD. My sports bra is off to her, I'm waving it high in the air and cheering wildly! I have been advised that she has a website. Here's the link. All I know about her is that she's a she, she's from Norway and she easily qualified 2 dogs, Sammie and Lyn to the semi-finals of the World Trial and got 1 of them, Sammie, through to the finals. This is a picture of her. A butt shot no less. I hate those. Obviously a male photographer, because a woman would have been much more sensitive. Anyway, who cares? She's through to the finals, which hasn't been done since Anne Kruger did it in 2002 at Bala, Wales. I will say that, Anne should have done it again in Tullamore, Ireland in 2005. I saw her qualifying and semi-final runs and she was absolutely brilliant, espcially in the semi. Her dog did not put a foot wrong, but the judges said she shed out of the ring and so didn't put her through. Now, I watched that semi-final run standing next to an International Supreme Champion, who when I asked what he thought about that, replied "Oh, I didn't see that." So, to me anyway, she was put down by the "women shouldn't run dogs" belief that is very much still alive and well making Karin's acheivement even more spectacular. She must have layed down some smokin' hot runs that simply could not be denied! Wish I had been there to see it and shake her hand. Here's her result so far: Day 1 qualifier on field 2 Finished 4th with Sammie on 200 points and ran 4th from the last Day 2 qualifier on field 1 Finished 2nd with Lyn on 198 points and ran 1st. Semi-final Round Finished 7th with Sammie on 382 points and ran 6th beating 35 of the World's very best dogs including 2 HUGE American hats, Tommy Wilson and Alaisdare Macrae who sadly didn't make it through to tomorrow's final. So it didn't matter to her what time of day, what field or which dog and she clearly wasn't intimidated by the event or the competition. I'll bet her children are really well behaved. I have no idea who this talented lady is, but I have a sneaking suspicion that we'll be hearing more from her, like on a Wheaties box, a Land Rover commercial or at Soldier Hollw in 2009. Cheers girlfriend, and all the best tomorrow.

  1. Most amazing thing about Karin is that she is only 21 years old. Many of old campaigners watching the world trila were extremely complimentary about her dog thinking it would be in the top few dogs in the entire competition.

A video of both Karin's semi final and semi final run can be seen at http://ffermio.tv/en/world-sheepdog-trials-2008
