The Real Time Canine II

After spending 2 years writing the Real Time Canine, the adventure continues with The Real Time Canine II. Read along as I look for just the right puppy to continue the experience. After false starts with Tim and Jed, I am currently training young Tam, and Spot, which are both off to a strong start. Please visit the RTC II to read about training sessions as they occur.

Now was that so bad?

Summer has cracked open in all it's sweltering glory, and it's gotten really hot here in my sunny, southern California border town. The bugs are out and I found a few fleas on the dogs. Ugh, I hate fleas. I don't know which is worse, flies or fleas, but both are in abundance right now and I've begun to establish my perimeter. I started with the fly predators mentioned in a previous post, and this week I moved on to the flea bath.
All the dogs got one, but Price is resigned and Mirk is stoic, so neither of them were fun to photograph. Star was the only one that thought he was being killed with soap. As if being tied to a bench wasn't bad enough, he had to endure shampoo. As you can see, he didn't dig it.
He survived though, and look how fluffy! He's never been fluffy before and it's not so bad. Here he is beginning to put the ordeal behind him and consider pouncing on Dexter. Because he lives indoors, poor little Dexter has had to undergo regular treatments. But he's like washing an apple just bought from the grocery store. I just hold him under water with one hand and wash with the other. Job done!

  1. poor babies! It's torture doncha know?

this time of year, I am bathing at least a dog a day. Not because of the bugs (don't seem to have much of a flea issue this year) but because of the serious shedding issue at my house. With 6 double (and heavy) coated dogs, the easiest way to manage the loose undercoat is to wash and use the high velocity dryer at least once a week. If I only had 2 dogs....it would be bout 2X a week for them. With the first bath, the hair comes out in clumps and flies everywhere. With the second bath, it's less noticeable and by bath #3....there is usually considerably less hair. For the first bath of the spring, that poor dog gets 3 days in a row....after that, I usually do 2 dogs per day.
